BRIHAT SAMANTAR KOSH: HINDI THESAURUS
Brihat Samantar Kosh is the first ever thesaurus in Hindi. Created by Arvind Kumar & Kusum Kumar, Hindi’s leading lexicographer couple, it is the most comprehensive thesaurus available in Hindi.
Hindi/Hindustani is now the second most widely spoken language in the world. Its ability to absorb influences and accept new expressions have given it a flexibility which has helped it survive the onslaught of English, the decline in reading habits and a rather disappointing apathy amongst native speakers to educate their children in the Hindi medium.
Conceptualised by the Government of India in 1973, the Hindi thesaurus project reached completion in 1996. Since then, the thesaurus has gone through several revisions. Many new categories have been created, new words added fresh meanings given.
The thesaurus now has 290,477 words! They have been categorised into 25,562 subheadings. It has 62371 cross references. It reflects the massive changes in syntax and additions in lexicon that have taken place as a consequence of the influence of social media, electronic media and a huge rise in the number of Indians traveling abroad. It is no longer a large dictionary. It is now a mini Encyclopedia!
The thesaurus has been elegantly printed and bound. It is very low priced as it has been subsidised by the Government of India.
